SUB PLANS

I'm not here right now...

so here's what you need to do on Wednesday, 3/2.

World Cultures

All classes:

Read this article on the Sunni-Shia Divide, then answer the questions below. Finish the questions for homework.

  • How does the Sunni/Shia divide affect modern international relations in the Middle East?
  • Explain the origins of the divide. Why are there two major branches of Islam?
  • Why did non-Arabs often convert to Shia Islam instead of Sunni Islam after being conquered by the Arab caliphates?
  • Which modern Middle Eastern country is controlled by a Shia leader? What changes/conflicts did this affect in neighboring countries?
  • How did the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 affect the Sunni/Shia relationship in that country?
  • Detail the differences in beliefs between the Shia and Sunni sects of Islam?
  • What factors have caused increased sectarian tensions and violence in the last few years?

Government

Both Classes:

Take the Reading Check Quiz on the homework that was due yesterday, then spend the period working on your senior/honors projects. If you are not doing that assignment, read the homework (Wood, pp.207-218).
